SUSTAINABILITY OF MICROFINANCE PROGRAMMES: Issues, Challenges and Solutions (Special Issue)

Guest Editor: Dr. Md Aslam Mia

Microfinance, a system of providing small-scale loans to the poor is a significant policy intervention in combating poverty and generating self-employment and has been linked with empowerment experiences in many developing countries. The system has been hailed as effective in bringing about financial inclusion of the poor and contributing towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and is being advocated to be expanded to non-financial services such as green microfinance. It is also empirically known to have played a crucial role in transforming the lives of women especially in rural context. However, the system also has some challenges that lead to its failure - for example as that arising out of the conflicting aims of financial viability and outreach goals to mention a few.

This special issue aims to focus on three different goals of MFIs, namely, financial sustainability, social outreach and environmental sustainability. While financial sustainability refers to MFIs’ ability to repeat their operations over time and outreach goals to how well the industry could uphold sustainable access of financial services for the poor; the environmental aspect of sustainability refers to environmentally friendly activities among its clients.

Articles related the above areas of interest are invited for publication with the upcoming special issue of The Journal of Development Practice (International). Priority will be given to empirical research (based on primary data/field-based/secondary data) or based on experiences from the field. The topics include but are not limited to:

  1. Microfinance – rural, urban, women and small traders.
  2. Financial sustainability of microfinance institutions (MFIs) ensuring continuous access to the poor.
  3. Financial sustainability and outreach objective of MFIs
  4. Fintech in microfinance programs.
  5. Assessment and Evaluation of financial, outreach and environmental goals of MFIs
  6. Microfinance programs and financial inclusion.
  7. Microfinance programs and environmental sustainability.
  8. Legal, political and environmental entities of MFIs for sustainable and environment development.
